St Mary's Church is a large former Catholic church near central Jiaxing, built by Carmelites and completed in 1930. It was once one of the city's tallest and most imposing buildings.
The church was badly damaged during the Cultural Revolution, and the interior is usually not open, but the restored exterior and lawn make it a worthwhile architectural stop. Its scale and European materials stand out in a city better known for canals, lake scenery, and revolutionary history.
