The Citadel of Jiaxing is a rare surviving trace of the city's old fortified centre. Jiaxing's citadel was first built in 231 and remained the administrative heart of the city for centuries before later use as barracks and housing.
Today the interest is in the survival of the site inside a modern city rather than intact walls on a grand scale. It is best seen while walking the old centre around South Lake, Meiwan Street, and nearby temples.
