Mount Putuo is an island entirely dedicated to Guanyin, the Buddhist bodhisattva of mercy, and every path leads to a temple, shrine, or meditation hall. The three major monasteries are the spiritual centre, but the island's pleasure comes from wandering between them on forest trails — through pine and camphor trees, past stone shrines tucked into rock outcrops, with the sound of the sea audible from almost every elevated point.
