Kuaiji Mountain

Kuaiji Mountain rises about two hundred metres above the southern edge of Shaoxing, and its forested slopes contain several important historical sites: the Mausoleum of Yu the Great (Dayu Ling), a Bronze Age and early Iron Age archaeological complex, and the terraced vineyards of the Kuaiji Mountain wine company that continues the two-thousand-year-old Shaoxing wine tradition.

The Mausoleum of Yu the Great is a complex of memorial halls, stone stelae, and a burial mound that has been maintained as a national shrine since the Zhou dynasty. The current buildings date from the Ming and Qing periods, with an avenue of stone statues leading to the main memorial hall. Whether Yu was a historical figure or a mythological one is debated by archaeologists, but the site has been revered continuously for three thousand years regardless. The mountain is reachable by bus from central Shaoxing in about thirty minutes.

A story
Kuaiji Mountain is where the great flood-controller Yu the Great is buried, according to tradition. Yu (ca. 2200 BCE) is credited with taming the Yellow River floods that threatened early Chinese civilisation — not by damming the rivers but by dredging and channelling them, a hydraulic engineering achievement considered the founding act of Chinese civilisation. The Mausoleum of Yu has been a pilgrimage site for over two thousand years.
