Shen Garden

Shen Garden is a small classical garden in the heart of Shaoxing's historic district, covering about fifteen acres with the standard Jiangnan elements — ornamental ponds, rockeries, pavilions, bamboo groves, and covered walkways — but elevated by an unusually specific literary legend that has made it one of the most emotionally resonant gardens in China. The story of Lu You and Tang Wan's chance meeting, the exchange of wine, and the heartbroken poem written on the garden wall has been retold in Chinese literature, opera, and film for nine centuries.

The garden has been expanded and partially reconstructed over the years, and the section containing the reproduced poems is relatively modern, but the atmosphere of the older parts — the lotus pool, the stone-paved paths under old trees, the narrow covered corridors — is genuine. The combination of classical garden aesthetics and a specific, verifiable human story gives Shen Garden a quality that purely architectural gardens sometimes lack. It is at its best on quiet weekday mornings before the tour groups arrive.

A story
In 1155, the poet Lu You and his first wife Tang Wan — whom he had been forced to divorce by his mother — encountered each other accidentally in Shen Garden years after their separation. She was by then remarried. They exchanged cups of wine and parted. That evening, Lu You wrote one of the most celebrated poems in Chinese literature on the garden wall: *Chai Tou Feng* (The Phoenix Hairpin), expressing his grief. Tang Wan wrote a response poem on an adjacent section of wall. Both poems are reproduced on the wall to this day.
