Shiliang Waterfall

Shiliang Waterfall drops sixty metres from a natural stone bridge — a single arch of rock spanning the gorge — into a deep pool below. The formation is one of the most photographed natural features in Zhejiang, and the combination of water, rock, and surrounding bamboo forest is genuinely striking. A path leads down to the pool for views of the fall from below, or you can cross the bridge for the view down into the gorge.

The area around the waterfall is scattered with small shrines and rock inscriptions, the legacy of centuries of pilgrims and poets who came specifically to this spot. A small temple just above the falls houses monks who have maintained the site continuously since the Tang dynasty. The walk from Guoqing Temple to Shiliang takes about two hours along a well-maintained forest path.

A story
The natural rock bridge spanning the gorge above Shiliang Waterfall was described by the Tang dynasty poet Hanshan, whose eccentric verses became foundational texts in Chan Buddhism and were later discovered by the Beat Generation in America. Hanshan reputedly lived in a cave on Tiantai Mountain for decades, and the bridge he wrote about is the same one visitors cross today.
