Zhoushan's attractions are spread across an archipelago of over 1,300 islands. Mount Putuo on Putuoshan Island is the main draw for most visitors — a sacred Buddhist mountain with forested trails, temple complexes, and a genuine pilgrimage atmosphere. Shenjiamen Fish Market on Putuo Island shows the other face of the archipelago: the industrial seafood port that makes Zhoushan one of the world's most important fishing hubs. For beaches, Zhujiajian Island has the best of Zhejiang's sand; for remoteness, the Shengsi Islands at the outer edge of the archipelago offer a very different experience from the well-visited inner islands.
