Kourion is arguably the most dramatic ancient site in Cyprus: a Greco-Roman city perched on clifftops above the sea, with views stretching along the coast toward Limassol to the east. The setting alone is worth the trip.
The site's centerpiece is a restored Hellenistic theatre, still used for open-air performances in summer. Next to it, the House of Eustolios has some of the finest mosaic floors on the island — intricate geometric patterns and a famous inscription welcoming visitors with good fortune. Beyond these headline attractions, there is a great deal more to explore: a Roman forum, early Christian basilica, public baths, and the House of the Gladiators with its well-preserved mosaic of combat scenes.
Just outside the main archaeological park, the Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates sits a short drive to the west — a well-preserved temple precinct that predates the city itself. The two sites together make a half-day easily.
Kourion lies on the coast road between Limassol and Paphos, about 14 km west of Limassol. The site is open daily from 08:00. Bring water and sun protection — there is little shade between the ruins, though a few covered rest areas overlook the sea.
