Practical Information

Currency

The Republic of Cyprus uses the euro (€). ATMs are widely available in all towns. Credit cards are accepted at most hotels, restaurants, and shops. In rural areas, carry cash.

Northern Cyprus uses the Turkish lira (TL), though euros, US dollars, and British pounds are widely accepted in tourist areas. ATMs in the north dispense Turkish lira.

Language

Greek is the official language of the Republic of Cyprus; Turkish in Northern Cyprus. English is spoken almost everywhere in the south — hotels, restaurants, shops, and most government offices. In Northern Cyprus, English is common in tourist areas but less so in villages.

Visas

EU citizens can enter Cyprus with a national ID card. Most other nationalities — including the UK, US, Australia, and Canada — can visit the Republic of Cyprus without a visa for up to 90 days.

Note: Cyprus is an EU member but is not part of the Schengen Area. A Schengen visa does not automatically authorize entry to Cyprus, though holders of multi-entry Schengen visas are exempt.

ETIAS, the EU's upcoming electronic travel authorization system, will apply to Cyprus once it comes into effect — check the current status before traveling.

Electricity

230V, 50Hz. Three-pin square plugs (same as the UK). If your devices use European two-pin plugs, bring an adapter.

Health

Standards of healthcare in the Republic of Cyprus are good. EU citizens can use the state health system with a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Comprehensive travel insurance is recommended for everyone.

Tap water is drinkable in most areas, though many locals prefer bottled water, particularly in summer when the supply is under strain.

Time Zone

Eastern European Time (EET) — UTC+2 in winter, UTC+3 (EEST) in summer (daylight saving).

Emergency Numbers

Emergency services: 112 (Republic of Cyprus). Police: 199. Ambulance: 199.

The Division

Keep in mind that the Republic of Cyprus and Northern Cyprus function as entirely separate entities. Transactions, phone numbers, and services do not cross the Green Line. A taxi booked in Nicosia south will not pick you up in Nicosia north, and vice versa.
