The castle sits right on the seafront near the southern end of the promenade. Built in 1625 during Ottoman rule, it originally served as a prison and garrison. The walls offer good views over the Scala Quarter and its Buyuk Kebir Cami mosque, once the heart of Larnaca's Turkish community.
Today the interior houses the Larnaca District Medieval Museum, a labyrinthine collection spanning finds from ancient Kition through the medieval period. The displays are modest but the building itself is worth the visit.
