Barbarism Museum

Sobering memorial to intercommunal violence of the 1960s

The Barbarism Museum (Barbarlık Müzesi) occupies the former family home of Dr. Nihat Ilhan, a military doctor whose wife and three children were killed during intercommunal violence in December 1963. The house has been preserved largely as it was, with bullet holes still visible in the bathroom walls. Photographs, personal belongings, and newspaper clippings document both this specific incident and the broader Turkish Cypriot experience during the troubles of the 1960s. It's a difficult but important visit for understanding the island's divided history. The museum is in the old city, not far from the Kyrenia Gate.
