Venetian Walls

16th-century star-shaped fortifications encircling the old city

The most complete surviving Venetian military architecture anywhere outside Italy: a perfect eleven-pointed star, with bastions named after the Venetian families who paid for them. The Green Line, the buffer zone separating north and south Nicosia, runs across the inside of the walls — so you can only walk parts of the circuit at any one time.

On the northern (Lefkoşa) side, the Quirini, Barbaro, and Mula bastions can be approached. The top of the walls offers oblique views over both halves of the city and the buffer zone in between. Bring a hat: there is no shade.

A story
The Venetians demolished hundreds of buildings to build these walls in just three years (1567–1570), tearing down churches, monasteries, and the medieval Frankish walls. The defence still failed: the Ottomans took Nicosia after a 45-day siege in July 1570, killing some 20,000 of its inhabitants.
