A short drive south of Salamis, the Late Bronze Age site of Enkomi — identified with the ancient kingdom of Alasia mentioned in Egyptian and Hittite records — is one of the oldest known towns on Cyprus. It flourished from around 1600 BC as a centre of the copper trade, supplying ingots stamped with the Alasia mark across the eastern Mediterranean.
What survives today is a sober grid of low stone foundations laid out across an open field, with a few cyclopean walls and the so-called "House of the Bronzes" still visible. The famous Horned God and Ingot God bronze statuettes found here are in the Cyprus Museum in Nicosia, but the site itself rewards a brief stop, especially for visitors who already plan to see Salamis and the St. Barnabas museum. There is no shade and almost no signage — bring imagination.
