The single-aisle stone church in the centre of Lania is built in the typical Cypriot mountain style — low walls, a tiled saddleback roof, a wooden bell-cote — and would not look out of place in any of the wine villages on this side of Troodos. Inside, the iconostasis is dark with age, and among the icons one stands out: the Virgin Mary of Valanas, said to have been found buried in the earth nearby and brought to the church centuries ago.
The church is usually unlocked during the day. As elsewhere in Cyprus, shoulders should be covered and the standard hush observed. Outside, the small paved square, the stone fountain marking the old village spring, and a couple of benches under the trees make this the social centre of the village.
