Dwaraka Tirumala

Hilltop Venkateswara temple called "Chinna Tirupati" by pilgrims, 40 km from Eluru

Dwaraka Tirumala, about 40 km northeast of Eluru, is one of the most important Vaishnavite pilgrimage sites in Andhra Pradesh. The Sri Venkateswara temple stands on a small hill at the end of a long climb of steps, drawing tens of thousands of pilgrims a week, particularly at weekends and during the Brahmotsavam festival in spring.

The temple complex includes the main shrine to Venkateswara, a separate shrine to Andal (the only female alvar saint), and several smaller pavilions. Eluru is the closest major railway station and bus connections are frequent; the climb itself is moderate and takes about half an hour. Mornings are quieter and far cooler.

A story
The presiding deity at Dwaraka Tirumala is a swayambhu (self-manifested) idol of Venkateswara, visible only from the chest upwards. The temple is one of two important Venkateswara shrines in this part of Andhra; pilgrims often refer to it as "Chinna Tirupati" — Little Tirupati — and pair it with a pilgrimage to the better-known temple in Chittoor district.
