Eluru Buddha Park (Gaja Vallivari Cheruvu)

Large landscaped lakeside park with a colossal Buddha statue

Eluru's Buddha Park surrounds the historic Gaja Vallivari Cheruvu tank, one of several ancient water bodies dating from the town's Buddhist past. The lake is landscaped with walking paths, a small island and a tall standing Buddha statue commemorating the area's heritage as part of the old Vengi kingdom, where Buddhism flourished from the early centuries AD until the Eastern Chalukya period.

It is the easiest green space in central Eluru, busy in the evenings with families and joggers. Boating is available on the lake.

A story
The lake at the centre of the park, Gaja Vallivari Cheruvu, is one of the oldest tanks in the town and dates from the Helapuri period when Eluru lay within the Buddhist kingdom of Vengi. The Buddha statue and surrounding park were added in the early 2000s as a recreational and historical landmark.
