Sanivarapupeta Someswara Temple

Ancient Shiva temple in central Eluru, attributed to the Eastern Chalukya period

The Someswara Swamy temple at Sanivarapupeta, in the old part of Eluru, is one of the oldest religious sites in the town — local tradition attributes it to the Eastern Chalukyas who ruled the region from Vengi between the seventh and twelfth centuries. The shrine has been repeatedly rebuilt, with the present structure largely a late Vijayanagara or early colonial reconstruction.

The Shivalinga in the sanctum is the focus of regular worship and the temple is busy during Maha Shivaratri. The walled compound also contains smaller shrines to Parvati, Ganesha and Subrahmanya.
