Dutch Cemetery

Machilipatnam was among the first Indian ports to attract the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in the early 17th century, and the Dutch Cemetery is the most tangible remnant of that era. The cemetery contains European graves dating from the 1600s and 1700s, with Dutch, English, and French traders all buried here at various points during the colonial competition for this port.

The site is quiet, overgrown in places, and not particularly well maintained, but the quality of the surviving inscriptions and the age of the tombs make it worth a visit for anyone interested in the Indian Ocean trade era. It sits in the older part of the city near the old harbour district. Auto-rickshaws from the town centre will know it; ask for the 'Dutch Kothi.'

A story
The Dutch East India Company (VOC) established one of its earliest Indian trading posts at Machilipatnam in 1605, making it a key node in the pepper and textile trade between India and the Netherlands. The cemetery holds some of the oldest European graves on the subcontinent, with inscriptions that pre-date the British Raj by over a century.
