Chimakurthy

Chimakurthy, about 25 km west of Ongole, is famous for its black galaxy granite — a deep black stone shot through with golden specks that is quarried here and exported around the world. The quarries are not a polished tourist site, but the landscape of cut rock faces and granite blocks is striking in its own right, and the town's prosperity is built almost entirely on this single export.

If you have an interest in industrial geology, an hour passing through the quarry area is worthwhile. Otherwise, Chimakurthy is best seen as part of a longer drive across the district, perhaps combined with the Gundlakamma reservoir.
