Getting There

Getting to Itanagar requires some planning. The nearest airport with regular service is Lilabari Airport (LMB) in Assam, about 60 kilometres from the city; taxis make the journey in around two hours on a winding road. Hollongi Airport, closer to the city itself, has been developed for limited service but connectivity remains thin — check current schedules before planning around it.

By rail, the closest useful station is Naharlagun, just a few kilometres from central Itanagar, with connections to Guwahati. The overnight Arunachal Express from Guwahati is the most convenient rail option.

Permits: All visitors — including Indian nationals from other states — require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh. Apply online through the official Arunachal Pradesh government portal before travel; the process is straightforward but takes a day or two. Foreigners require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) in addition, which can be arranged through a registered tour operator.
