Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum

The Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum provides the clearest introduction to the tribal cultures of Arunachal Pradesh, a state of remarkable diversity that most visitors never reach. The collection covers traditional costumes, jewellery, weapons, musical instruments, and tools from the various indigenous groups of the state. There are also exhibits on the region's natural history and its position in the eastern Himalayas.

The galleries are not flashy — displays have an old-fashioned educational style — but the material is genuinely interesting and the context it provides for understanding the state is invaluable. If you are spending any time in Arunachal Pradesh, start here. The museum is in the centre of Itanagar, within walking distance of the zoo.

A story
The museum's collection documents more than 25 distinct tribal groups — Adi, Nyishi, Apatani, Garo, Monpa and others — each with its own language, dress, and ritual traditions. Walking through the galleries, you begin to appreciate just how culturally diverse Arunachal Pradesh is; the state has more tribal groups than any other in India.
