The Itafort Buddhist Temple, identifiable by its vivid yellow roof, is one of Itanagar's most visible landmarks and reflects the Tibetan Buddhist cultural current that flows through much of Arunachal Pradesh. The temple complex includes a large prayer hall decorated with thangka paintings and butter lamps, and a row of spinning prayer wheels along the entrance path.
The area around the temple has a small monastic community. Visitors are welcome but should dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered. Mornings are quieter and more atmospheric than afternoons when tour groups sometimes arrive. The temple is near Ita Fort, so the two can be combined in a morning.
