Birdwatching

Pobitora's wetlands and grasslands make it a very good birdwatching destination, particularly from October to March when migratory species are present. The seasonal waterbodies attract bar-headed geese, which winter here after their extraordinary trans-Himalayan migration, along with several duck species, herons, storks, and waders. The grassland edges support raptors including pied harrier and various eagles.

Serious birders can request a guide at the Forest Department office near the sanctuary entrance. The best birding tends to be on foot around the buffer zone wetlands rather than from a jeep inside the main sanctuary, though the jeep safari also produces good sightings from the open vehicle. Early morning is essential — activity drops sharply once the temperature rises.
