The National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi occupies the former Jaipur House, a princely residence built in 1936 near India Gate. It is one of three NGMA branches across India and holds the country's largest public collection of modern and contemporary Indian art — works by Amrita Sher-Gil, Jamini Roy, Rabindranath Tagore, and subsequent generations of Indian painters and sculptors fill several floors.
The permanent collection is displayed chronologically and thematically across the original palace and a large modern extension. Temporary exhibitions of international and Indian contemporary art rotate regularly. The sculpture garden and café in the grounds are pleasant spots. Entry fees are modest and the gallery is closed on Mondays.
