Albuquerque Mansion

This crumbling mansion behind the south end of Anjuna Beach was built in the 1920s by the wealthy local landowner Manuel Albuquerque, who modelled it on the palace of the Sultan of Zanzibar, where he had spent time as a young man. The result is a strange and lovely piece of Indo-African architecture — Portuguese balconies, Mughal arches, an octagonal turret, the lot.

It is private property and not formally open to visitors, but the gates are sometimes ajar and the staff are tolerant of polite enquiries. Even from the road outside it is one of the most photogenic buildings in north Goa.
