Anjuna

North Goa beach village shaped by hippie-trail parties, flea markets, and the Chapora coast.

Anjuna Beach is one of the most popular beach villages in north Goa, known since the 1960s as a gathering point for the international hippie trail. The all-night beach parties with trance music still draw a diverse crowd from around the world, though the scene has mellowed considerably from its wilder days — Shiva Valley at the south end of the beach is the most consistent of the survivors.

The Wednesday flea market is the best reason to leave the beach for a few hours — go early, ideally by 7am, before the heat and the crowds build. You will find everything from Kashmiri textiles to Tibetan jewellery to second-hand paperbacks. The quieter Saturday Night Market at nearby Arpora is its evening cousin.

The Albuquerque Mansion, built in the 1920s and modelled on the palace of the Sultan of Zanzibar, is worth a detour for its faded grandeur. A short walk north brings you to the ruins of Chapora Fort, one of the best sunset spots on the coast.
