Anjuna Beach

Anjuna Beach is a two-kilometre crescent of dark sand divided by clusters of black volcanic rock. The northern end, where the cliffs drop sharply to the sea, is the most photogenic; the southern end is broader, flatter and where most of the beach shacks set up.

Swimming is reasonable on calm days but a strong undertow develops in the monsoon and the early winter. Sun loungers and shade are free if you eat at the shack that owns them. The water is at its clearest in November and again in February.

A story
The beach was the unofficial finishing post of the overland hippie trail from Europe in the late 1960s — travellers who had crossed Turkey, Iran and Afghanistan would arrive here, sell whatever they had on the rocks at the south end, and live on the proceeds for months.
