Souza Lobo

A Calangute institution that has been right on the beach since 1932. Souza Lobo is what the package-tour crowd thinks of when it thinks of Goan fish — a big, open-sided restaurant with a long line of tables looking out at the surf, and a menu built around whatever came off the boats that morning.

Order the king prawn butter garlic, the recheado mackerel or the crab xec xec; share a sannas (steamed rice cake) to soak up the curry. Prices are reasonable for a beachfront place with this kind of view, and the kitchen is genuinely good — not just coasting on the location. It fills up fast at sunset; reserve, or come for late lunch.
