Calangute is a good base for the whole northern coast and the Portuguese sights inland. Anjuna's Wednesday flea market and clifftop bars are 15 minutes north on a scooter; Candolim's quieter beach is just south; Mapusa's Friday morning market is the working heart of north Goa; Old Goa and Panaji together make an excellent full-day trip into colonial-era Goa.
