Mae de Deus Church (Saligao)

A ten-minute scooter ride east of Calangute, the Mae de Deus church at Saligao is the photogenic one — a tall, white, neo-gothic façade with a slender spire, set in tidy paddy fields. It was built in 1873 to house a statue of the Mother of God rescued from a ruined convent in Old Goa, and the building gives Saligao village its skyline.

Try to catch it at dusk, when the white walls are floodlit against the dark green of the rice fields. The interior is modest, but the setting and the silhouette are the reason to come; if you're on a scooter, loop back via the Saligao crossroads and stop at the village bakery on the way home.
