Viva Panjim

Family-run Goan kitchen in a Fontainhas townhouse

Viva Panjim — sometimes called "Linda's place" after the owner — has been in the same Fontainhas townhouse for over twenty years and is widely considered one of the best places in the city for traditional Goan home cooking. The menu is long and unfussy: pork vindaloo, beef xacuti, prawn balchao, fish recheado, chicken cafreal, and the unmissable bebinca for dessert. Portions are generous; the prices are reasonable.

The dining room spreads across the ground floor and a small open-air veranda, with mismatched wooden tables and walls hung with old family photographs. It fills up early in the evening; arrive by 7pm or expect a wait. Cash and card; no alcohol licence, so bring your own (or order from Joseph Bar around the corner).
