Bajreshwari Mata Temple

The Bajreshwari Mata temple — also known as the Brajeshwari or Kangra Devi temple — is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, the most sacred Devi shrines in Hinduism. It draws pilgrims from across northern India year-round, with the main festival periods of Navratri bringing enormous crowds. The present structure, rebuilt after the 1905 earthquake destroyed the earlier temple, is notable for its three domes, which are said to symbolise the syncretic traditions of Hinduism, Islam, and Sikhism.

Non-Hindu visitors are generally welcome but should dress modestly, remove shoes, and follow the directions of the temple staff. The area around the temple is busy with flower sellers, sweet shops, and pilgrimage paraphernalia — the street life is as interesting as the shrine itself.

A story
The temple was sacked and its treasures removed by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1009 AD — the attack on the fabulously wealthy shrine is one of the earliest recorded events in the history of Kangra. Over the following centuries the temple was rebuilt and looted repeatedly, and its current three-domed structure dates from 1930.
