Shimla's steep terrain limits vehicle access to many parts of the town — the Mall Road and the Ridge are pedestrian-only, which suits the place perfectly. The main attractions are walkable from the centre, and the walk up to Jakhoo Hill (2 km from the Ridge) is the best excursion in town.
On Foot
The centre — Mall Road, the Ridge, Christ Church, Lakkar Bazaar — is compact and best explored on foot. The Jakhoo Hill walk (about 2 km from Scandal Point) leads to the Hanuman Temple at the summit, with panoramic views over the town and the Himalayan foothills.
Buses and Taxis
Local buses and taxis serve the wider city and surrounding areas. Taxis are the most practical option for reaching the bus station (below the town centre) or the Kalka–Shimla railway terminus. HRTC (Himachal Road Transport Corporation) buses connect Shimla to Manali, Dharamsala, and other Himachali towns.
