Kibber Village

Kibber is one of the highest permanently inhabited villages in the world with motorable road access, sitting at around 4,270 metres with views across the Spiti Valley and the peaks of the Spiti-Kinnaur watershed. For decades it was cited as the highest village in the world with a road — a distinction now competed by several others — but the setting remains extraordinary, and the village itself is one of the most photogenic in Spiti.

The village has a small monastery, a scattering of whitewashed houses with flat roofs stacked with firewood and dung fuel for winter, and the particular quality of high-altitude light that makes everything look sharper than it should. Kibber is also the trailhead for the trek to the Pin Valley National Park, a route that crosses the Bhabha Pass at 4,900 metres and descends into the lush Pin River gorge. The wildlife sanctuary around Kibber is one of the better places in Spiti to spot snow leopards in winter, when the cats descend to lower altitudes. Local guides can arrange multi-day snow leopard tracking expeditions between January and March.
