Kausarnag Meadows

Alpine meadows above Aharbal, used by Gujjar nomads in summer

Between Aharbal Falls and the high lake of Konsarnag, the Veshaw valley climbs through a long band of alpine meadows used for centuries by Gujjar and Bakarwal nomads as summer pasture. Wooden huts and stone shelters dot the high grass; horses, sheep, and the occasional Gujjar guard dog graze.

The meadows make a good day hike from Aharbal — three or four hours up to one of the lower pastures, with views east to the Pir Panjal ridge. You will need a guide if you want to push further toward Konsarnag, and a tent if you intend to stay overnight. Friendly tea and a bowl of saag from a herder's hut is the highlight for most visitors.
