The shrine of Syed Simnan Sahib stands on a rise above the Veshaw river in Kulgam town. Syed Simnan, a 14th-century Sufi mystic who travelled from Simnan in Iran to spread Islam in the Kashmir Valley, lived and died here; the shrine grew up around his grave. The current structure of carved deodar wood with a pyramidal roof is typical of Kashmiri Sufi architecture and probably dates from later rebuildings.
The interior is hung with green cloth and votive offerings; the courtyard outside is shaded by mature chinar (Oriental plane) trees. Local Muslims visit daily, especially on Thursday evenings, and large numbers come for the urs (death anniversary) festival. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome; dress modestly and remove shoes at the inner gate.
