The Veshaw rises from Konsarnag glacier high in the Pir Panjal, plunges over Aharbal Falls, and then meanders through Kulgam town on its way to join the Jhelum near Sangam. The lower stretches around Kulgam are slow, clear, and stocked with brown and rainbow trout introduced by the British in the late 19th century — the angling is some of the best in the Kashmir Valley.
Fishing requires a permit from the Department of Fisheries office in Srinagar; rods and tackle can be hired locally. Even if you have no interest in fishing, the riverside walk through chinar and willow groves around Kulgam town is a peaceful introduction to the rhythm of valley life.
