Dalgate

Dalgate is the southern gateway to Dal Lake — the area around the sluice gate that controls the lake's water level, where the Boulevard Road begins and the houseboat colonies first appear. The Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) is at Dalgate, making it the practical hub for new arrivals: houseboat bookings, shikara hire, tourist information, and the departure points for valley bus routes all cluster here.

The neighbourhood has a slightly chaotic energy — the concentration of tourist services creates a constant low-level pressure of tours and rides being offered. But once you've sorted your houseboat or hotel and taken a shikara away from the ghat, it quietens down considerably. The waterside garden at Nehru Park, just north of Dalgate, provides a more relaxed space for sitting by the water than the main Boulevard ghats. Dalgate is also the most practical base for anyone wanting to walk into the city centre — Lal Chowk is about 2 km south, easily walkable in the morning cool.
