Sera Je

Gelug monastic community in exile, known for study, debate, and a large resident sangha.

Sera Je is part of the wider Sera monastic community in Bylakuppe, rebuilt in India after the flight from Tibet. It feels less like a single attraction than a monastic town, with study halls, residences, shops, and roads used by monks going about ordinary business.

The most interesting moments are the debate sessions, when students test each other through fast question-and-answer exchanges, hand claps, and memorised argument. Times can change, so ask locally before making a special trip across the settlement.

A story
Sera was one of the great Gelug monasteries of Tibet. After 1959, surviving monks rebuilt Sera Je and Sera Mey in Bylakuppe, turning a refugee settlement in Karnataka into a major centre of Tibetan monastic education.
