Bylakuppe

Tibetan settlement in rural Karnataka, centred on large exile monasteries and monastic life.

Bylakuppe is one of the largest Tibetan settlements in India, set in the warm countryside of southern Karnataka rather than the Himalaya. Travellers usually come from Mysore, Coorg, or Kushalnagar to see the monasteries, but the place is more than a photo stop: it is a working exile community of monks, nuns, schools, shops, prayer halls, and settlement roads.

The headline sight is Namdroling Monastery, often called the Golden Temple, with huge gilded statues and a steady flow of pilgrims and day visitors. A few kilometres away, Sera Je belongs to the Gelug tradition and is known for monastic study and debate.

Bylakuppe is spread out, so do not plan it as a tight urban walk. Hire an auto or car from Kushalnagar, dress and behave as you would in active religious spaces, and leave time for the quieter roads between the monasteries. The best visit is unhurried: one big temple, one monastic campus, a simple Tibetan meal, and a little patience.
