The Tibetan settlement is the connective tissue between Bylakuppe's famous monasteries. Roads pass schools, small restaurants, prayer flags, monastic residences, and shops selling ritual objects and everyday goods.
It is worth treating the settlement itself as part of the visit. A short meal, a walk near the monastery gates, or a drive between camps gives a better sense of Bylakuppe than entering one temple, taking photographs, and leaving.
