Chandravalli Caves

The Chandravalli Caves lie in a quiet valley south of the main town, carved into a low rocky hillside above the Chandravalli valley lake. The caves are ancient: rock-cut chambers with traces of early paintings on the walls and, according to local tradition, ten lingas said to have been installed by the Pandavas during their exile.

Just above the caves is the Ankali Math, a pillared assembly hall that was once the residence of a Veerashaiva guru and his followers. More caves riddle the hillside behind the math — some go underground. It is a peaceful spot away from the fort crowds, and the views back over the valley and its tank are genuinely lovely in the early morning.

A story
Excavations at Chandravalli in the early 20th century uncovered coins, ceramics, and jewellery dating back to the 3rd century BCE — evidence that this valley was occupied continuously for at least 2,000 years before anyone thought to build a fort on the boulders nearby.
