Pushkarani Step Wells

Geometric ceremonial water tanks in Hampi's royal and temple ruins

Hampi's pushkaranis are stepped ceremonial water tanks, built with the same geometric confidence as the surrounding Vijayanagara temples and royal structures. The best-known tank in the Royal Enclosure is especially striking, a precise pattern of descending stone steps around a square basin.

They are easy to rush past between larger monuments, but pause here. The tanks show how water, ritual, engineering, and royal display fitted together in Hampi, and their clean lines photograph beautifully in the hard Deccan light.
