Tunga Anicut

The Tunga Anicut is a low weir across the Tunga river just west of the city centre, built in the 19th century for irrigation. It has become the primary riverside gathering point for Shimoga residents — families spread out on the rocks in the evening, children wade at the edges, and vendors set up snack stalls along the embankment.

There's nothing grand about it, but the setting is pleasant: the river runs clean and clear here, the ghats-and-paddy landscape sits in the background, and the activity is genuinely local. Come in the late afternoon to catch the light on the water and the evening crowd. It's within easy walking or auto-rickshaw distance from most parts of the city and a good place to get a sense of Shimoga's everyday pace before heading out to the bigger sights.
