Shimoga is a transit hub as much as a destination, but the city and its immediate surroundings reward a day or two. The Tunga river runs through town, its banks used for morning walks and evening idling. The district museum gives context to the Keladi Nayaka heritage before you head into the countryside.
The real payoff is the ring of nature around the city. Elephant camps, bird sanctuaries, and trekking trails are all within easy reach, and Shimoga's bus stand — one of the better-connected in the region — makes day trips to Jog Falls and Agumbe straightforward.
