Kerala's coastline stretches over 500 km along the Arabian Sea, offering everything from busy resort beaches to quiet fishing villages. Kovalam, at the southern tip near Trivandrum, is the most developed — three crescent bays separated by rocky headlands, with Lighthouse Beach the most photogenic. Further north, Varkala sits atop dramatic red laterite cliffs with a long beach below.
Beyond sunbathing, the coast connects to Kerala's famous backwaters — a network of lagoons, canals and lakes running parallel to the shore. Houseboat trips through Kumarakom and Alleppey are the classic way to experience them. The seafood everywhere is exceptional: fresh prawns, kingfish and mussels cooked in coconut-based curries.
Best visited October to March when the monsoon has passed and the sea is calm enough for swimming.
