The Kochi-Muziris Biennale, launched in 2012, is Asia's largest contemporary art festival. Held every two years from December to March, it takes over Fort Kochi and the surrounding historic district with installations, performances, and exhibitions by artists from across the world. The venues are as varied as the work itself — warehouses, palaces, churches, abandoned buildings, and purpose-built structures.
The Biennale has a strong identity: it's intentionally rooted in the history and culture of Kochi, particularly its heritage as a port where cultures converged. The programme is extensive and can fill several days. Even during non-Biennale years, a number of permanent installations and artist residencies keep Fort Kochi's arts scene active. Check the schedule before you travel — it draws large crowds and accommodation fills quickly in the opening weeks.
