The Paradesi Synagogue, built in 1568, is one of the oldest active synagogues in the Commonwealth and the oldest in India. It stands at the end of the lane known as Jew Town in the Mattancherry quarter, surrounded by antique and spice shops. The blue-and-white hand-painted Chinese tiles covering the floor — no two identical — were a gift from a wealthy merchant in the 18th century.
Inside, Belgian glass chandeliers hang from the ceiling and gold plates inscribed with Hebrew letters line the walls. The building is small but ornate. The adjacent cemetery, where some of Kochi's earliest Jewish residents are buried, adds quiet historical weight to the visit. The synagogue is closed on Saturdays, Sundays, and Jewish holidays.
