Kumarakom is the classic backwater excursion from Kottayam, set on the edge of Vembanad Lake among canals, coconut groves, and low wetland. It is more of a landscape and village area than a single sight, but that is exactly the point.
Travellers come for boat trips, lake views, and a slower Kerala rhythm than the busy inland town. It works well as a day trip from Kottayam or as an overnight base if the backwaters are the focus of the journey.
