Kottayam's main attractions are its ancient Syrian Christian churches, which are among the oldest in India and contain remarkable stone crosses and murals that show the meeting of Indian, Portuguese, and early Christian traditions. The town also serves as a jumping-off point for Vembanad Lake and the backwaters to the west, and for the Cardamom Hills to the east.
